Do our dogs need to wear clothes or are we overstepping nature here and anthropomorphizing our best friends? We see plenty of instances on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and even in mainstream media of celebrity dogs in fashionable wears sporting all manner of looks.

Dog Clothing Trends
Some of us might think it’s silly whereas some of us just must have the same look for our dog. But the question remains, is this even necessary?

During the colder months in northern climates, our dogs sit at home and take in less outside exercise. It’s cold outside, and both they and you may be reluctant to hit the cold pavement in search a patch of grass not covered by snow, ice, or frost. The sidewalks and roads can be very chilly on bare feet and finding a dry spot for your dog to do his business in can also be a challenge. Many people purchase coats, sweaters, and even little booties to help their four-legged friends cope with going outside in the cold.

But some people may argue that dogs have lived for thousands of years without wearing clothes, and they have natural coats of fur to keep themselves warm. As true as this is, people also forget that not all dog breeds lived in and tolerated the same climates. Take the Chihuahua, who is one of the most fashion-forward breeds today, for example. The Chihuahua developed over thousands of years in Central America in Mexico where the weather is warm, near year-round. While snow has been known to accumulate in mountainous regions of Mexico, not many of us would consider this country a top destination for skiing and other winter sports.

Now imagine how many Chihuahuas are living in New York City or Chicago, where snow, ice, and freezing rain is frequent during the winter months. A little extra warmth for those cold days may help keep the Chihuahua safe, happy, and healthy.

So, if we’re going to dress our dogs in sweaters, coats, and boots, why not make them fashionable too? The next time you see a little Chihuahua proudly walking (or being carried) down the streets, keep in mind, he’s warm, he happy, and well protected.
