Most pet owners have owned a few dogs over the years.  If you’re like me, maybe less than a few.  My first dog was more like my first child.

She was my favorite companion. We went everywhere together.  She was a great protector (Rottweiler) and she was great with kids.

I’m not saying that dogs are more important or more valuable than other people in our lives. But they do trump humans in many ways.

For one thing, they love us unconditionally. And that’s more than I can say about many human companions.

Contrary to humans, it doesn’t take much to make them happy. Even the smallest gesture excites them — throwing a toy, taking them for a ride in the car, giving them a treat. How many of us show such appreciation and adoration for such simple pleasures?

Their loyalty is only matched by the way they care for us — perhaps even more so than we could ever care for them. Dogs can sense how we’re feeling. It doesn’t matter whether we’re happy, angry, or sad, they just instinctively know what to do.

My dog died at 5 years from a tumor that burst.  I was devastated.  It took me over 10 years to even consider getting another pet.  When I watched this video, I somehow felt a little better — not as sad.

If you have experienced the loss of a four-legged friend, you may get some comfort from this poem.  I know I did.

Your Canine Guardian Angel‘ Poem
I know that you must miss me,
By the tears rolling down your face.
But believe me, when I tell you that,
I’m in a very good place.

There are meadows here to run in,
And plenty of rabbits to chase.
There are other dogs to play with,
To frolic with and race.

So please don’t worry about me,
My spirit feels light as can be.
There’s no more pain to plague me,
I’m young again and free.

And I’ll be watching over you still,
of that you can be sure.
I’m your canine guardian angel,
And my love for you remains pure.
